Council Meeting Highlights - April 07, 2009
Council met by conference call on April 7, 2009, primarily to review and approve documents for presentation to the AGM including the Annual Report and Resolutions. In addition, Council considered two appeals of the Registrar’s decisions, established a task team to continue the development of licensing examinations and, at the request of the Education Committee, revised some aspects of the Continuing Medical Education program.
Licensing Examinations
Council has provided an alternative to recent graduates seeking Saskatchewan licensure. In order to meet the requirement for successful completion of a licensure exam, they may either:
- Write the licensure examination in the province in which they trained and provide the results to SCoP ; or
- Wait until a Saskatchewan licensing examination is available (likely in October, 2009).
In either case, according to the bylaws, the applicant may apply for a Restricted License for six months while they wait for the exam to be scheduled. The Restricted License will require that at all times they work with, and be supervised by, a member in good standing with SCoP who is licensed at the same or a higher level than their graduating level.
Continuing Medical Education (CME)
Council considered new information from ITLS Saskatchewan which would mean that EMT-As who had not trained to the ICP level would not be able to take the ITLS Advanced course. Council adjusted the CME requirement for EMT-As from ITLS Advanced to ITLS Basic. EMT-As who take ITLS Basic will have to have ALS sign off by a Medical Advisor. EMT-A/ICPs may take the ITLS Advanced and use that for the ALS Assessment with the agreement of their Medical Advisor.
Council corrected an earlier oversight by adding Medications Pertinent to Scope of Practice to the mandatory components of the EMR CME credits.
Council approved the following clarification of CME policy recommended by the Education Committee:
- Provider certifications must be valid for the entire year of licensure in order to be considered current and eligible for license renewal, i.e. it may not expire during the year of licensure.
- For instructors of mandatory courses, Instructor certification must be valid during the year of licensure in order to be considered current and eligible for license renewal, i.e. it may expire in the year of licensure.
- ALS assessment for EMT-A and EMT-P must be conducted in 2009 and then subsequently once every two years. (2009 is necessary as there are some changes in requirements).
Annual General Meeting
Council revised and approved for distribution the Annual Report and package of Resolutions for the AGM. These will be mailed to each SCoP member after Easter.
