Core Training Requirements - Entonox

The following Core Training Requirements are outlined as guidance to agencies or instructors who intend to provide training in the new protocol. The actual training module used by the agency or instructor must be approved by the college. Please submit using the SCoP Course Approval Form (pdf).
Approved Training for use of new entonox protocols by SCoP members at PCP level must address the following objectives:
- Understand the purpose in a prehospital setting for the use of Entonox
- Understand the physiological effects of the use of Entonox
- Understand the indications, contraindication, side effects, precautions, any interaction with other medications, and onset and duration of Entonox
- Understand the components of the Entonox System and their storage and preparation
- Demonstrate Entonox administration.
Approved Training will include individual assessment of the following factors:
- List basic types of emergencies where entonox could benefit patients
- Describe occasions / patients where entonox would not be used
- Demonstrate the application of entonox to a simulated patient
- Describe the parts and assembly of the entonox system
- Describe the pharmacodynamic effect (action of the drug) of entonox
- Describe the pharmacokinetic effect (what the body does with the drug) of entonox
Approved training will be provided by an ALS provider who has been trained in and is familiar with the use of Entonox.
A copy of the course outline and/or presentation and assessment test and/or checklist for each participant should be kept on the instructor or agency file for five years and could be subject to audit by the College.
The instructor should “sign off” the skill on the practitioner’s CME Report Form. This can be inserted in the section entitled: “Approved Courses (not part of Agency CME Program)”. The instructor’s signature indicates proficiency. Please insert the date of the assessment on the form below or beside the signature.
This new protocol training can be awarded 5 CME credits if the training is approved by the College. It can be added to the Agency CME Program however it still needs to be recorded separately on the form.
Training must be refreshed at least every two years as part of the Review of Medications Pertinent to Scope of Practice component of the Continuing Medical Education Requirements.
